January 29th, an enlightening panel discussion was held by La Ruche, the active network of French-speaking women in Shanghai. Moderated by La Ruche’s Jeanne Chabaud, the panel featured insights from Natacha Extier, head of a marketing services agency, and Guillaume Mallet, Account Manager at System In Motion, a company committed to “Empowering the knowledge worker” with AI tools, automation platforms and AI transformation consulting services.

The focus of the hour-long discussion was on everyday applications of AI tools:

• Introduction to Generative AI tools: The panel kicked off with an overview of Generative AI tools, a category that has gained prominence for its wide-ranging applications, such as image recognition. The real revolution lies in the fact that non-programmers can now give complex instructions to the machine.
• Boosting productivity at work: Both Natacha and Guillaume shared their daily experiences with AI. Natacha emphasized the importance of keeping up with regularly updated platforms, while Guillaume pointed out that certain tasks could still take several hours using the tools, but with productivity gains of up to 50%.
• Enhancing creativity: Natacha uses Chat GPT and graphic design tools like MidJourney to generate inspiration, much like brainstorming with humans but with quicker responses. The AI assistant doesn’t replace human creativity but helps overcome ‘blank page syndrome’ and boosts productivity. Guillaume highlighted another powerful application: sentiment analysis for text rating.
• Everyday use: The panel also touched upon everyday use cases, such as creating a fitness program or preparing a WeChat post for a community event. They also discussed platforms that offer vacation planning, where language models are connected to other tools, like databases of tourist sites.
• Safety reminder: The panel concluded with a safety reminder that Chat GPT can easily hallucinate, so it’s crucial to review its output if it’s to be published, and the expert eye is necessary. For professional use, choose paid platforms and check the prompts.

The Q&A session that followed saw discussions on copyright issues, students submitting AI-generated assignments, and the future prospects of generative AI tools.
